WHO I AM

I am Nancy Kramer, a mediator and arbitrator for disputes of all sorts. Much of my practice involves workplace, family (straight and gay), commercial, co-op and condo and medical malpractice disputes. Before becoming a mediator over 10 years ago, I practiced law, with not-for-profit organizations and with the New York Attorney General’s Office. I now handle only mediation, arbitrations and other dispute resolution work.

WHY I BECAME A MEDIATOR

After graduating from Columbia Law school I worked in a number of public interest and government positions, including as a Legal Aid lawyer and as a Bureau Chief for the New York Attorney General—involved in regulating co-op and condominium issues, among others.

As a lawyer I was always interested in dispute resolution and quickly realized how costly and draining, both financially and emotionally, litigation can be. My interest in simpler, easier ways of resolving disputes, especially between individuals, led me to mediation.

WHAT I DO NOW

I handle private cases and am an active panel mediator for the American Arbitration Association; United States Postal Service REDRESS Program (workplace disputes); New Jersey Superior Court system (commercial, contract, employment, insurance, etc.); New York City Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (workplace disputes) and U.S. Transportation Security Administration, among others. And I am a Special Master handling appellate mediations for the New York Appellate Division, First Department. In addition to mediating, I arbitrate for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)

I also teach about mediation and train mediators. Recently I have developed and/or taught in programs given by the American Bar Association; American Society For Training and Development (ASTD); Brooklyn Bar Association; NASD/Eastern District Bankruptcy Court; New York City Bar Association; New York City Corporation Counsel; New York State Attorney General’s Office; New York University School of Law, New York County Supreme Court, Commercial Division and Touro Law School.

EDUCATION

I attended Brandeis University from which I graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa in 1963 and Columbia Law School where I graduated as a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar in 1966. I have taken numerous mediation training and advanced courses, including ones given by the American Arbitration Association, Center For Mediation in Law, Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York, New York City Bar Association and United States Postal Service.
